Africa – the new Zion

‘What does it mean to be a follower of Jesus Christ in 21st century Africa?’ That was the question posed to assembled leaders from across the continent.

The answer, said Lord Paul Boeteng, could be found in Luke 4, in the words of Isaiah that Jesus quoted when he began his ministry. ‘The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, because the Lord has appointed me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the broken-hearted… to provide for those who mourn in Zion.’

‘Africa,’ he said, ‘is the new Zion.’

Lord Boeteng was addressing the second day of the African Biblical Leadership Initiative (ABLI Forum) in Cameroon. ABLI, an initiative of Bible Society, is now in its seventh year.

He said: ‘The responsibility now lies with us to bring about a transformation that fulfils that prophecy. As Christians, we must bring about that transformation of lives, communities and nations. The opportunity for us in Africa is enormous.’
