Where are all the women?

A conference dominated by men heard an impassioned plea for women to be released into leadership.

It was a plea that came from a woman: ‘We look at ABLI and wonder – where are the women?’ asked Perpetua Fonki, of the Presbyterian Church, Cameroon.

In group after group that had gathered at the African Biblical Leadership Initiative, men outnumbered women.

‘Where are the women at the top?’ Ms Fonki asked. ‘We need to have a candid conversation about women and power.’

The session on gender and leadership ended in prayer – led by a man – for God to raise up women to lead: ‘Let us ask God to break the barriers of tradition and to release the great potential women bring to our cities and our nations.’
